Dancing with the Dark Night

“When you face writer’s block, just lower your standards and keep going.” — Sandra Tsing Loh

We all inherently look for ways to self-soothe. Sometimes we soothe ourselves with the stories we tell ourselves. Other times we dig our holes deeper with a conditioned inner dialogue that is the opposite of soothing.  Our self-soothing can be a creative act if we happen to be available for it.

Journalling, drawing, doodling, scribbling, moving, dancing, writing, sculpting, photographing, storytelling, writing and other forms of creative exploration expands the range of expression to verbal and beyond.

Saying yes to your curiosity can open doorways that regulate neural pathways and initiate moments of valuable self-discovery. Sometimes in therapeutic creative exploration, we access a part of ourselves that was hidden behind a wall of tears, locked in the intelligence of the body until it was time. Creativity can breathe life into the secret chambers of our veiled aliveness.

There is nothing the paper can’t handle. If you can say it to yourself, perhaps can say it to the paper or move in response to your experience. Curiosity & courage are companion plants in the garden of creativity.

Maybe you want to rip up the paper you wrote on. Maybe the primal language of your inner world wants to paint your imagination with yellow and write a poem about one of your tears. Your curiosity is the yellow brick road. I wonder where it will take you?

My last Rewilding Creativity session of the year happens Dec. 15: “Dancing with the Dark Night – A Creative Exploration of Winter’s Gifts”.
